By: Jalien Anderson The Clawon Trojans football team is getting ready to start their spring training after a 7-2 regular season finish. The team also advanced to the MHSAA Playoffs but faced a first round to the hands of the Country Day Yellow Jackets. Coaches are hoping that the success of the previous season progresses even further this small. With the loss of half the varsity team to the 2014 senior class, the team certainly has some big voids to fill. The greatest loss may be offensive weapon, Marquian Johnson, the 6'4 204 pound receiver. Johnson led the Trojans in receiving yards (1331) and touchdowns (14) last season. As well as breaking school records with 1331 receiving yards and 14 receiving touchdowns. I was able to catch up with Marq for a brief interview on his experience playing high school football. During this time he shared with me his fondest memory wearing the blue and gold. "My favorite memory this past season was the against the win over South Lake" said Johnson. A game where the Trojans were able to come back and win the game in the final 3 minutes of the game. Marq was also able to share a word of advice for the 2014 team. "My advice to the next team is that your gonna get what you give, don't rely on just talent, put the work in." A bold statement from the talented young receiver. Marquian will be furthering his football career as a Saginaw Valley Cardinal. Be sure to follow him through this collegiate career. The loss of Marquian isn't the only hole the team will fall in. Defensive nightmare, Charles "Chuck" Tarver, who led the Trojans in tackles (122) will also be graduating this years. Charles might've been the teams most disciplined force. He frustrated opposing coaches on both offense and defense. Chuck was the second leading receiver for junior QB, Ty Sparks, and ranked amongst the top 10 for leading tacklers in the state. Although he doesn't plan on taking his football career to the next level, Chuck did leave us with some words for the upcoming fall football team. "Stay in the weight room." A simple statement that remains a crucial factor for the Trojans as they lacked sized on the team last season. Although the shortage of intimidating presences, obviously didn't take from the large amount of talent. Coach Sparks has some big shoes to fill as he's lost the majority of his varsity team. There are young talents from last years 7-2 season only looking to step up and carry on another great. Miguel Chene, Ty Sparks, Cam Campana, and Nick Magil-Diaz are the head of those young talents. Tune into the Clawson's 2014 fall football season to see how the Trojans pick up from last year. ![]() Grant Rushing vs. The World
By: Chris Oles 12 May 2014 For Grant Rushing, a sophomore at Clawson High School, he might not appear to be the most intimidating person in the room, but he’s not afraid of a good fight. Even if it’s in his own back yard. A few months ago, the 16 year old started boxing some of his classmates in his backyard. No ring. No referee. “Just boxing gloves and swing for the fences,” Rushing told me was all the equipment necessary for his backyard scraps. “It was not a fight club,” Rushing also added, “It was all for fun, there was no beef between any of us.” However, for not being a fight club, it sure attracted a lot of attention. In just two fights in the two weeks that it lasted, Rushing’s fights attracted as much as 20 to 30 people gathering in his backyard to him fight one of his friends. “People like fights,” Rushing said excitedly, “Their adrenalin kicks in, it’s all off adrenalin.” Even though Grant’s peers caught an interest to it, his family was not very happy with him. After only a couple fights, his parents shut it down. And shutting it down came with consequences. Following the ending of the fights, Rushing was “Grounded” for a “Long Time”. “It was ridiculous, it was blown way out of proportion,” Rushing said, “but I get it, injuries can happen.” Although, when asked, if possible, would he still have it going, Rushing responded, “If there would be no injuries, heck yeah!” Also, Grant’s classmates aren’t the only people on his list of who to fight. “I would fight Mr. Sines, I would put him in his place.” In the end, he fought two people, beating one by TKO and drawing the other fighter. Drawing big crowds in his backyard and getting grounded by his parents, Rushing still has the urge to fight and he wishes there was a boxing team for the school. It wasn’t a fight club, but it was a good ride for the sophomore, and it was a lot of fun while it lasted. Picture Caption: Grant Rushing, Sophomore at Clawson, wishes there was a boxing team at CHS ![]() Aric Coleman
By: Jalien Anderson 12 May 2014 Clawson High School senior Aric Ivan Coleman is certainly a very intricate young man. I was able to catch up with the CHS student for a brief interview. Born December 4, 1996, Aric lives a straightedge lifestyle. He is influenced by the acts of Kanye West and Mike Tyson, he wants to be future pro boxer/trainer. “My dream is to become a pro boxer as well as a personal trainer. I’m in the gym a lot trying to just get stronger, I really want to fight Floyd Mayweather” a statement made by the young 17 year old senior. During his high school time Aric has been very active. He’s been on both the schools swim and track team. To accommodate his athletics, he’s been hitting the gym to strengthen his technique, practicing boxing. He hopes to attend Western Michigan not too far from his hometown Detroit, where he’ll further his interests of boxing. Outside of school you can catch Aric working with his grandfather’s business at, Lawrence Fire Protection. If not working, he can be seen in the pool or at the gym. He does everything with such dedication and enthusiasm as if his confidence has no downfall. His friends describe as both funny and weird as he’s almost always seen engaged in silly tactics moving through the halls. His behavior connects to the message he tries to send to his peers. “Just do what you want” is advice Aric has left behind for underclassmen. This is a simple statement that has a lot of meaning behind it. Aric wants to influence people to live life with no setbacks and chase after what you want no matter what. Even if this involve breaking the rules, the satisfaction of a dream is worth more than that “if only” feeling. ![]() Girls Soccer
By: Corri Martin 27 March 2014 After tryouts ended the girls soccer players split up into a varsity team and a J.V team. The girls then started practicing and preparing for their first league game on Monday, March 31, 2014. Both teams will be playing against Marysville High School. Sophomore Sam Sherman says, “We have all been working hard and together to our best ability to hopefully pull out a win against Marysville.” In the past few years Marysville has been a pretty big threat to our teams. Both the teams are determined to win their first league game, even though the girls have had to practice inside the gym because of the snow and other bad weather. Our varsity girls’ soccer team has had the title of league champs for the past three years. The varsity team consists of three freshman, five sophomores, two juniors and five seniors. Senior Olivia Paquette says, “Our team has been working very well together, and we’re all very determined to win our first game.” Regaining their title as league champs all starts with their first game. Girls Soccer Ready to Defend Title
By: Corri Martin 18 March 2014 The season for girls’ soccer has finally arrived. The Girls Varsity Soccer team took the title of district champs last year. Senior Josie Daniels says, “It will be difficult to live up to last year’s title as district champs, but I think we can accomplish it with hard work and dedication.” After losing three seniors from last year, there are new spots open on the Varsity team. There are many requirements you need to qualify for a spot on the varsity team. These requirements include being able to sustain a medium to high level run for an extended period of time, being able to maintain control and possession of a soccer ball in light to moderate traffic, being able to strike a ball from a distance with accuracy and pace, and being able to compete offensively or defensively with top players in size, speed and technical ability. Senior Olivia Paquette says, “It’s going to be different not playing on the same team as my sister anymore, but I’m excited for what this season has in store for our team.” Olivia’s sister Kayla Paquette also scored the most goals for the varsity team last year. Varsity coach Tom Pavlovich and J.V coach Jared Kullman are holding tryouts this year. Tryouts started on March 10, 2014 and are going until March 14, 2014. The Varsity team is determined to regain their title as district champs again this year. Filipino Fury
By: Doug Vincent 18 March 2014 “Ocampo.”The name is Filipino for 3-pointer. Okay so not really, but it definitely could be. Jared Ocampo is one of the best 3-point shooters in the whole state of Michigan. Just like his dad and assistant coach Jasper Ocampo used to do back in his day. Just recently the younger Ocampo set a new all-time career 3-point record at Clawson High School as he knocked down seven 3-pointers in the team’s win over Lake Shore, bringing his career total up to 192. Ocampo broke the previous mark of 187 set by Jason Mulheisen in 1991. “Breaking the record on my senior night was probably the best memory I have playing basketball ever,” said Jared. Jared had played on some pretty memorable teams. His sophomore year the 2011-12 Trojans wrapped up the second MAC Silver championship in a row and went all the way to the district title game. “The team loved each other like brothers. The coaches were great. All together that was one of the best teams I was ever a part of,” said Jared while remembering the good days. But it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows for Jared. Back in his younger CYB (Clawson Youth Basketball) days Ocampo was shut down in the 5th grade championship game by now teammate, and best friend, Doug Vincent. “I think that was the only time I never hit a 3-pointer,” said Jared laughing. Ocampo’s squad ended up losing the championship game in OT by 3. Jared Ocampo is a name to remember going into college and the future. Because even though the Filipino shooter is small in size he has a big heart, and will not be told he can’t do something. And whether it’s here or in the Philippines this shooter is not done firing. |
Oles’ Outstanding 10: WWE Finishing Moves/WWE Top 10 Finishers
By: Chris Oles 10: Walls of Jericho – Chris Jericho http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQfTeC7eNfA Chris Jericho’s take on the Boston Crab is a submission move that bends the opponents back while also adding stress to the shoulders and neck. Once the walls have been locked in, the opponent has no choice but to give up. 9: Choke Slam – Big Show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XGl4KFEBes Seven feet tall, 500 pounds, the largest athlete in the world. The Big Show is an intimidating specimen and the thought of him wrapping his monster hands around your neck and slamming you into the ground is terrifying enough to put him on this list. 8: RKO – Randy Orton http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-RNeKu0TE0 The RKO is a version of The Diamond cutter where Randy Orton leaps through the air with his arms wrapped around his opponent’s head and violently throws them to the ground. It’s a violent and aggressive finisher that few get up from. 7: Attitude Adjustment – John Cena http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVleEjcB9j0 Crowd favorite, John Cena, has mastered the attitude adjustment with his athleticism and brute strength. He can lift anyone on his massive shoulders and absolutely slam them into the ground. After the opponent’s attitude has been adjusted, a three count is sure to follow. 6: 619 – Rey Mysterio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzOeyD63A-U Perhaps the most recognizable and crowd-pleasing finisher in the WWE, the 619. Named after Mysterio’s hometown, San Diego, California, Rey starts by placing his opponents between the ropes. He then flips between the ropes kicking them directly in the face. Match over. 5: Pedigree – Triple H http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBJdBIeb-3E Starting off as Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Triple H is a WWE legend and so is his finisher, the Pedigree. It’s simple, but it is one of the most physically violent finishers. Placing his opponents head in between his legs, HHH then proceeds to lift up their arms and slam their face directly into the ground. Triple H’s opponents take a nice nap after being pedigree’d. 4: The People’s Elbow – The Rock http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVo1Y3N3WFM What The Rock says, goes. Arguably the most recognizable superstar, The Rock has boosted his popularity by using the People’s Elbow on anyone and everyone. Pumping up the crowd, throwing his elbow pad as a souvenir, bouncing off the ropes and landing an elbow right to his opponents face. The People’s Elbow is definitely a classic. 3: Tombstone Piledriver – The Undertaker http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ5IqYXNV2Y What’s more frightening than coming back from the dead? The Undertaker uses fear and physical strength to win matches. The Tombstone Piledriver is one of the most recognizable finishers in the history of the WWE. He picks his opponents upside and drives their heads straight into the mat. Goodnight. 2: Sweet Chin Music – Shawn Michaels http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGKLrob8X5c Shawn Michaels will go down as one of the best superstars in WWE history. So will Sweet Chin Music. A simple kick to the chin, but it was so much more than that. He hyped up the crowd, taunted his opponents, and tried to kick their head off with his nasty kick. 1: Stone Cold Stunner - “Stone Cold” Steve Austin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvCYj1UPpMI “Stone Cold” is one of the most violent and explicit superstars of all time. And the stunner was a perfect reflection of that. A swift kick to the groin followed by a quick neck-breaker, the stunner did damage to the head, back, neck, and self-esteem. Bottom line, Stone Cold was one tough son of a bitch. Hill’s Top Ten WWE Wrestlers
By. Justin Hill 10. Randy Orton I liked him because he had a stubborn attitude towards opponents but had an awesome finisher the “RKO”. 9. Kane By far one of the best entrances, with fire blasting out of the ring post, it was just electrifying. 8. Eddie Guerrero Had an awesome finisher, “Five star frog splash”, and every week he would roll out to the ring in his classic custom low-rider. 7. The Rock One of the best entertainers for the fans, always loved upon, and was always ready to “open up a can of whoop ass” on someone. 6. Shawn Michaels (HBK) The heartbreak kid was always a fan favorite, and always cracked people’s chins with the all-time favorite “sweet chin music’ finisher. 5. Triple H Apart from just being an all-out tough wrestler, he had a sweet finisher” the pedigree” and would sometime bring out a sledgehammer whenever he had to lay the hammer on someone. 4. John Cena With his classic “F-U” finisher, he had a nice tough, gangsta appearance to him, and he made the classic WWE championship spinner belt. 3. Stone Cold Steve Austin By far one of the most electrifying, wrestlers to watch, who was just plain out tough, who was nicknamed “the rattlesnake” and have the best finisher “stone cold stunner”. 2. The Undertaker A veteran to the WWE, he is just one the best all time wrestlers to ever have live, the classic “chokeslam”. Known as “the dead man” because he came back from the dead after being buried alive. 1 Jeff Hardy My all-time favorite wrestler, he was high flying with a daredevil mentality. With the classic “ swantom bomb” from anywhere around the arena, rather its on people, ladders, tables etc. ![]() Clawson Varsity Softball By: Doug Vincent The Clawson girls varsity softball team has kicked off their 2014 season with a 2-2 record. The Trojans are returning 7 players from last year’s team. And thinking back to last year, the Trojans went 10-8 and won a district title. This year’s Trojans have a lot of work to do if they want to get back and win their second straight district title. When we asked about the district title game, senior captain Erin Shrum said, “We have to stay hype; we can’t get down on ourselves. We have some new girls this year so we need to mesh as a team and get to know each other on the field.” There is a lot of pressure on this year’s Trojans team to have another winning season and get back to the district final. And a lot of the pressure is put on the shoulders of team captain, 4-year varsity starter, and #1 pitcher Kayla Morrison. I talked to Morrison about if she felt like there was a lot of pressure on her to lead this years Trojans team, she told me, “Yes! There is a ton of pressure on me. And it’s hard knowing that no matter what I have to pitch pretty much every game.” And with the team playing any where from 3-6 games a week that’s a lot of work on the arm of a young pitcher. But Morrison is not the only captain on the team. The team is also ran by the senior leaders Erin Shrum, Ashley Smiley, and Jamie Scribner. And this year’s team is put all on the backs of these four captains. Senior captain Ashley Smiley told me, “The coach is making the Seniors pretty much run the team, so it’s our job to get the younger girls up to speed”. The Trojans have some work cut out for them, but once they put the pieces together they are going to be a tough team to beat. ![]() “Fresh” In To High School
By. Justin Hill 12 May 2014 Colin Douglas McKnight attends Clawson High. He is a very interesting and energetic kid. He is 15 years old and is a freshman in high school. In school, his favorite class is gym which isn’t surprising for a person who loves sports. Besides sports he loves spending time and hanging out with his friends. Colin likes to play sports a lot. He plays for Clawson’s Varsity baseball team, JV football and freshman basketball. He was moved up from JV baseball to varsity baseball due to shortage of players, but has been doing very well on that level. Out of all the sports he plays baseball is in his heart. He also takes pleasure in watching professional sports teams and even college. According to Colin he says” My favorite teams are the Detroit Tigers and the New England Patriots”. He has interest in college teams like Michigan and USC, not sure those are the schools he would like to attend but he does have hopes of playing sports in college. Somewhere in everyone’s life they have a special moment that they will probably remember forever. For Colin his came earlier in his life. When I asked what his defining moment was, he said” winning the state championship in baseball with is FED baseball team”. He said I loved the feeling of feeling on top especially in the sport of baseball and he would love to do it again in high school. With Colin being a 3 sport athlete, I would not be surprised if it happened again in his life. Seems like sports is a nice part of his life, and he hopes to always do well in each one.
